The story of a small 1845 stone church in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia

Five miles south of New Market, Virginia, on the west side of the old Valley Pike (Route 11) sits Bethlehem Stone Church. This small and unassuming stone church rests in the shadow of a newer brick church in the County of Rockingham where Arkton and Tenth Legion Roads meet in the small community of Tenth Legion.

Bethlehem Stone Church witnessed and survived four years of Civil War. It was used as a hospital and to hold prisoners. The church grounds housed repeated encampments. It suffered damaging artillery shelling, and stood as a silent witness to “The Burning”.  Through it all the little stone church emerged. With the help of faith and strong community the damage was repaired and Bethlehem Stone Church continued to serve the spiritual needs of the community beyond the first half of the next century.

We encourage you to take the time to look around our website. Read about the stone church history, which is also a history of the community, and check our upcoming events.

You are invited to come see and visit the stone church. It has a wonderful story to tell. If you plan to be in the area on a day that the stone church is not scheduled to be open (see our ‘Upcoming Events’ page) and would like to see the church, you may contact us and we will try to arrange to have the church open for you.

THANK YOU FOR VISITING
